If your friend can't deal with the attacks on their own, I'd recommend seeking professional help. It's not fun, it's not easy (at first), but emphasis is on that it/they help. (Warm hugging embrace for you and your friend). : )

I think, forgetting smth is not really the way to overcome it. It's much more productive if u accept that it has happened and get ur expirience.
Memories will remain, If not in your mind, then in your body. Accept and overcome.
